A CONTRACT worker was killed and nine others were injured in an explosion at the Petronas gas processing plant (GPP) Complex A in Kerteh yesterday.
It was understood that one of those injured suffered 100 per cent burns. A press statement from Petronas Gas Berhad (PGB) said the fire occurred at 3pm as employees of their contractor, Hyundai-PFCE Consortium (HPC), were servicing the GPP pre-treatment unit during a scheduled maintenance shutdown.
The complex's emergency response team managed to bring the fire under control by 3.30pm. PGB said a HPC worker was killed and two others were hospitalised, while several others were given medical treatment.
The dead worker was identified as Rosli Mansur, 31, from Paka, Dungun. One of victims, Mohd Zamri Fitri Mat Noor, 25, arrived at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu at 7pm yesterday. He was unconscious with burns on his body and face. Six other victims were sent to the Kemaman hospital, while two were given outpatient treatment at Dungun hospital. One of the workers, who wanted to be identified only as Fauzi, said he was working with 23 others when he heard a loud explosion.
"We were shocked and scrambled out of the complex as quickly as we could to save ourselves," he said.
Kemaman acting police chief Deputy Superintendent Abdul Marlik Hakim Johar said they are investigating the cause of the explosion.
