"RM65b refinery set to meet Asia Pacific petrochemical demand by 2016"
The Petronas Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (Rapid) project in Pengerang, Johor, is set to bring a huge impact to the country's economy and transform the lives of the people in the area.
Petronas' Rapid executive project director Wan Yusoff Wan Hamat said besides job opportunities and economic spin-offs which would benefit the locals, the RM65 billion project would also offer a chance for the younger generation in rural Pengerang to connect with the outside world.
"The people working for the project are highly-skilled and their presence in the local community may inspire youths to pursue higher education for a better future," he said during a media briefing yesterday.
Wan Yusoff cited the success of Petronas projects with the local populace in Kerteh, Terengganu, and Malacca. He also said the local community should not worry about the environmental impact as Petronas had a good track record of adhering to strict standards.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is slated to launch the project on May 13. Petronas Rapid is an entry point project in the Pengerang Masterplan, which includes plans for an industrial park, and residential and commercial properties, among others.
Petronas Rapid's proposed refinery would have a capacity to process 300,000 barrels of oil per day and it would supply feedstock for its petrochemical complex. It would also produce gasoline and diesel fuels that meet European specifications. Petronas Rapid is aimed at capitalising on the Asia Pacific demand for speciality chemicals, petroleum and commodity petrochemical products by 2016.
The project is expected to create job opportunities for up to 45,000 contract workers during its construction phase and 4,000 permanent jobs upon completion in 2016.
